Frozen floods on the Sieg -

A rare natural spectacle

Photo of the month - February 2021

Without snow or frost, the Rhineland winter is a very dreary and gray affair. Photo motifs in nature are then rather difficult to find. At least for me.

The last few days, however, there has been a rare sequence of weather events that have provided for rare conditions. First, some rivers flooded. So too at the victory. This is not uncommon at this time of year. However, this year there was a cold spell immediately after the heavy rain and snowfall. This cold has meant that the flood has frozen on the meadows. As the water receded under the layer of ice, the ice subsided and bizarre ice formations formed. In cold coastal regions this happens in the winter months with every tidal range. That this also happens at the victory is a real rarity. So I went several times to take different shots. This picture was taken in one of my favorite places. If someone is interested, the tree in the middle is also the motif of the "Photo of the month - March 2019". However, taken from a slightly different angle.

The picture was taken some time before sunrise, at the "blue hour". The resulting coloring goes well with the cold mood that the picture is supposed to convey.
