Winter landscape on the Kahlen-Asten

The Photo of the Month - December 2019

After all trees have lost their leaves in autumn, the landscape usually turns into a dreary, uniform brown-gray. For landscape photography, the motifs are scarce and it is actually the perfect time to edit pictures on the computer. This is particularly true for the mostly flat North Rhine-Westphalia. It looks very different when snow falls. Fresh snow gives the landscape a whole new mood. Many of the "messy" elements on the floor are covered, which simplifies the overall landscape. Last weekend the weather forecast for the Kahlen-Asten near Winterberg promised a lot of fresh snow. So I got up early to be there in time for sunrise. Admittedly, my hope for a "real" sunrise was not particularly great. When I arrived the assumption was confirmed because the summit was enveloped in the clouds. For about two hours I photographed a wide variety of subjects until the first hikers and snow walkers arrived. The picture below shows one of my favorite pictures from that morning. The fog or clouds ensure that the tree in the foreground is well separated from the background.
